The Manor of Seacroft, was granted by James I., in 1602, to Charles, Earl of Devon. Three years later by a deed of bargain and sale, dated 10 September, 3 James I., (1605) he conveyed it to George Shillito, Esq., of Houghton, in the parish of Castleford. There are no records of when Seacroft Hall was built but Platt and Morkill (Records of the Parish of Whitkirk, Leeds, 1892) suggest that "It was probably built by the Shillitos". George, by deed of covenant, dated 25th June, 11 James I. (1613), settled it in jointure upon his intended wife, Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir Richard Bulkely, kt of Beaumaris.
George predeceased Elizabeth and she later married Sir Ralph Hansby, kt. of Tickhill, a known Non-conformist. By deed dated 19 February, 1656, Elizabeth conveyed Seacroft to James Nelthorpe, Esq., of Windsor.
In the reign of Charles I., a dispute arose between Mr Shillito, owner of Seacroft, and Mr Tempest lord of Roundhay, as to the lordship of Seacroft -- the former claiming that by virtue of the Crown's grant to the Earl of Devon the latter place had been severed from the Manor of Roundhay, and had been, therefore, constituted a seperate Manor. It would seem that George won his case as a Court for the Manor of Seacroft, independant of the Court of Roundhay, was regularly held by the Nelthorpes from the years 1698 to 1768, and occasionally at later dates. Two centuries later the same point came again into dispute, and formed the subject of a trial between the lord of Roundhay Manor and the owner of the Seacroft Estate in 1822.
George is thought to be a descendant of Francis Shillito of Houghton, a considerable owner of land and coal in Castleford and the surrounding area, he was married to Alice the daughter of Wiliam Clarke by Elizabeth his wife (the daughter of John Freston of Altofts). Francis left in his will, dated 15th Nov 1602, (proved 12 May 1603)
"to George and Alice, my sonne Francis children 6s. 8d."
and made bequests to his sons Matheas and
Alverey and daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Johan.
Francis Shillito of Heath, near Wakefield, married Elizabeth the
daughter of John Dolyff of Heath and had issue
1. George S. and 2. Alice S.
George was admitted to the Society of Gray's Inn on 22 Mar 1606 and became a High Court of Star Chamber attorney and Justice of the Peace. In 1613 he brought an action against William Cartwright concerning the Manor of Haliwell, near Castleford in which he had interests. In 1621 he became Member of Parliament for Pontefract.
George Shillito died intestate and Administration of his estates was granted to his widow, Elizabeth on 10 January 1638. George appears not to have left children.
The branches of Shillito of Methley and Castleford are currently being researched. To assist this research data and other material from all sources from these parishes would be greatly appreciated:-

Son of Thomas Shillito of Fryston and mentioned
in his father's will and that of his Uncle Richard.
Gervase owned property in the town including a barn in Northgate
which was set alight during the Civil War in 1645.
He married firstly Elizabeth Waddington on 24 Jun 1613 at Pontefract All Saints. Their children were mentioned in the will of Walter Waddington of Pontefract who died at Featherstone in 1628. Gervase was Mayor of Pontefract from September 1644 and was in Pontefract Castle from the beginning of the first seige of the Castle during the Civil War on Christmas Day of 1644. He was one of the several Gentlemen Volunteers of whom Nathan Drake, an army officer, within the Castle, wrote of in his diary and account of the sieges of the Castle.
It is not known what happened to Elizabeth his wife but he married secondly at Featherstone Katherine Shillito of Whitwood on 3 Feb 1647 and at that time held the position of Alderman of Pontefract.
Due to fact that Pontefract Castle had from
time immemorial been the foremost Royal Castle in the North of
England and the rumblings of Civil War between The Royalists led
by King Charles I and Cromwell's "Roundheads" was
threatening peace in Yorkshire the parish church of All Saints
Pontefract across the lane from the Castle was without a clerk
from 1642 following the departure of the Rev. William Styles for
the relative safety of Kingston upon Hull.
Being in a vulnerable position the church was subsequently
damaged by cannon fire beyond immediate repair. Only a handful of
burials took place there amongst the ruins. Baptisms and
marriages had to take place at the daughter chapel St Giles near
the market square. It was not until the 19th century when a
partial restoration was undertaken. It was not until the 20th
century when inner sanctum walls were inserted within which to
hold services that this fine church was finally brought back into
service.
Gervase was buried at Pontefract on 30 Jan 1661/2, the parish register of St Giles records that he was buried "in the church". His final resting place was most probably at All Saints as enquiries made in 1999 brought to light that no burials had ever taken place within St Giles church, being an overflow chapel for services the church had no sanctified graveyard A handful of skeletons were discovered close to the church when paving work was carried out in the 20th century.
In his will dated 20 Jan 1661, Gervase mentions "My son George. My brother Richard of Castleford, Jervase son of the said George. John my son. Ann Jackson and her sons John and Thomas and her dau. Mary. My dau. Ellen Morrills children. William Shillito and Elizabeth his wife and their children.
