Commonwealth period. Oliver Cromwell's Act came into force 29 September 1653 -custody of the church registers was removed from clergy and put in the hands of an appointed Parish Register (sic). Marriages thereafter to be performed by a Justice of the Peace. Some of the parish Registers could not get their heads around spelling names and some thought the year should start on March 25th, church years, others worked in calendar year style and started the year in January. Allowance made for year in text, spellings as entered at time.
